How to build a Warhammer: The Old World army list
Last updated:
A Warhammer: The Old World army list is a points-limited Grand Army: a General, then Characters, Core, Special, Rare, and optional Mercenaries. Order of Battle is a free unofficial builder for that job. Browser army builders for this game are scarce. No account. Lists stay on your device. The Old World list builder is in beta.
Open The Old World listsBefore you start
- A faction you own or want to plan. Grand Armies include The Empire of Man, Kingdom of Bretonnia, Dwarfen Mountain Holds, High Elf Realms, Wood Elf Realms, Dark Elves, Grand Cathay, Tomb Kings of Khemri, Vampire Counts, Warriors of Chaos, and more.
- A points limit. 2,000 is the usual default in this builder.
- Official publications nearby. The app is a helper, not the rulebook.
Build the list in Order of Battle
- Open the list builder. Open the menu and tap List builder under The Old World (marked Beta). You land on /tow/list-building with your saved lists.
- Create a new list. Tap New list. Choose a faction, then pick its Grand Army or one of its Armies of Infamy. Change army lets you go back and pick again.
- Set points and format. In Options set the points total (2,000 by default) and the format: Open, Grand Melee, Combined Arms or Battle March. The format changes which limits the builder checks.
- Add units by category. Each category has its own add button: Add character, Add core unit, Add special unit, Add rare unit and Add mercenary unit. Pick a unit, set its size and it appears under that category with its points.
- Choose your General. Tick General on a character's card, or pick one in the General menu under Options.
- Set options, command and weapons. Tap a unit to open its sheet. Choose weapons, armour, command models (champion, standard, musician) and other upgrades. Points update as you go.
- Add magic items. On a character or a unit allowed to take them, open Magic items, search the list and add items within the unit's allowance.
- Build a character. On a character's card, tap Equip to set its mount, command role and magic items in one place.
- Add detachments and join units. Units that allow detachments get Add detachment. Characters can join a unit from the Join row on their card.
- Fix the flags. A red issues pill above the list counts problems: a category over its share, Core under its minimum or a format rule broken. Tap it to see each one and fix them until it goes away.
- Copy or share the list. In Options tap Copy list as text to put the roster on your clipboard for an opponent or organiser.
- Play. Tap Play. The same list opens in Play mode with damage, magic, phases and army rules. Tap back to keep building.
Composition this builder checks
Characters at most 50% of the army. Core at least 25%. Special at most 50%. Rare at most 25%. Mercenaries at most 20%. Open Options for format: Open, Grand Melee, Combined Arms, or Battle March. Details: The Old World army composition.
Then play it
When the list is ready, tap Play at the top of your list. Track wounds, magic, phase checklists, and victory points on the same roster. Step by step: how to use Play for The Old World.
Catalogue data follows community The Old World catalogues, not a Games Workshop feed. Confirm points and rules before you play.
